Still dosed up on flu tablets, we left London on our London-Frankfurt-New York travel odyssey. About a day later (on the same day) we touched down at JFK and successfully found Jenai’s sister Keren and bf Nick at their West Village apartment.
By an amazing stroke of luck, Keren and Nick were house-sitting at a friend’s place so we were able to snag an apartment of our own right in the ‘village’. Awesome!
After we caught up on sleep, Keren and Nick showed us the secrets of New York – fine dining, funky bars, designer boutiques, ‘Off-off Broadway’ theatre and importantly how to catch the subway. Despite the sub zero temperatures (in Celsius AND Fahrenheit!!) we managed to cover what seemed like a lot of ground. But the funny thing was that apart from a little excursion to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass – they love their acronyms) and a ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty, we probably didn’t get too much further than halfway up Manhattan. Crazyness.
Observations from our first time tourist eyes included the relatively narrow
Broadway (Sydney’s is wider!), not as many ‘brownstones’ as you might think (not everyone lives in Sex in the City style apartments), the amount of household rubbish on the streets (no room for bins in apartments), and the size of the city (it’s a big place). The pocket parks and public transport seemed a little over loved (read under funded) but Central Park was fantastic.
We did get to see a lot of the sights: Wall St, The Metropolitan Museum, MOMA, Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Broadway, and a glimpse of Lady Liberty. We even had a personally guided tour of the UN from Keren with her backstage pass. But perhaps the best part of being there was catching up with Keren and Nick and exploring the labyrinth of streets with them. It was fun, fast, expensive and freezing, and we loved it all.
